16 Point Dental Check
At Loughrea Dental we do a thorough 16 point dental health check where we examine the health of the whole mouth. We are not simply ‘just looking for holes to fill!

Our goal is to help you keep your mouth healthy and maintain your teeth throughout your entire life.
At the dental health check we will examine:
- The overall health of your teeth and dental restorations
- The health of your gums, examining you for bleeding, inflammation and bone loss
- Your jaw joints to check that they are correctly aligned & wear on your teeth are even
- Under old fillings, between your teeth and under your teeth by taking low dose digital X-rays when necessary
- Perform an Oral Cancer Screen
We focus not only on your dental health but also on your general health. A regular updating of your general health allows us to inform you of the effect that any changes to your wellbeing or medication may have on your dental health.
At the end of the examination, we will discuss our findings with you and design a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We will discuss all costs before treatment.

Hygiene Treatments
Plaque, which is that sticky film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth, causes gum disease and also tooth decay. Therefore if you remove that plaque effectively, most gum disease and tooth decay will be prevented and good dental hygiene is the key to achieving this.
Gum disease
Gum (periodontal) disease is the most common chronic disease in the world. It occurs when the gum tissues and bones that hold the teeth in place become infected. The symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums, bad breath and taste and loosening teeth. It can also be present without the person’s knowledge & can become serious without many outward symptoms, similar to high blood pressure or cholesterol. If left untreated it will result in tooth loss.

What will our dental hygienists do for you?
Our Dental Hygienists, will work with you to help keep your mouth healthy by removing any hard plaque that has been allowed to build up and they will share their skills, tips and techniques for helping you to control plaque every day at home. If you remove that plaque effectively every day, most gum disease and tooth decay will be prevented. This will help you to keep your smile healthy and your teeth for life.
We will tailor a specific oral hygiene plan for you. This will ensure that you are getting maximum benefit out of your home care routine, controlling the plaque that will cause gum disease and tooth decay. This is especially important if you fall into any of the following categories
We will tailor a specific oral hygiene plan for you. This will ensure that you are getting maximum benefit out of your home care routine, controlling the plaque that will cause gum disease and tooth decay. This is especially important if you fall into any of the following categories
- If you smoke and drink alcohol – particularly if you both smoke and drink
- If you have a specific severe life stress – such as bereavement, redundancy or divorce
- If you are overweight
- If you have heart or lung problems
- If you have diabetes
- If members of your family have or have suffered heart problems, osteoarthritis or alzheimers
- If other members of your household have periodontal disease
- If you are pregnant
We know that these risks, together with gum inflammation, have been linked with serious general health problems in later life and so it is important that the plaque in your mouth is removed effectively.
Our Dental Hygienists treat both adults and children. If children establish good oral hygiene habits early in life they are more likely to keep those habits into adulthood. This will help ensure they have a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. They will teach your children the correct techniques and dietary habits to start them on the road to excellent dental health.

Mouth Cancer Screening
We carry out a comprehensive 16 point dental health check where we screen for mouth cancer. If detected early these cancers are easily treated. We also take part in the annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Day where we provide free mouth cancer exams. This is a great opportunity to get checked for oral cancer.
